Hurricane Beryl barrels into Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula

Hurricane Beryl threatens Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula as strong Category 2 storm

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Hurricane Beryl has made landfall on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula as a strong Category 2 hurricane, bringing heavy rains and strong winds to the popular tourist destination.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Beryl made landfall near the town of Tulum with maximum sustained winds of 110 mph (177 kph). The storm is expected to weaken as it moves inland, but it is still posing significant threats to the region. A dangerous storm surge of up to 6 feet is possible along the coast, and heavy rain is expected to cause flash flooding in some areas.

Beryl is the first hurricane to make landfall in Mexico this year. The storm has already caused significant damage in the Caribbean, where it destroyed homes and left thousands of people without power. The storm is expected to continue to bring heavy rain and strong winds to Mexico throughout the day.

Residents in the path of the storm are urged to take precautions and follow the instructions of local officials.
